The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Virginia, offers a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 in memory of Nell Collins Hatcher, a teacher and Girls State counselor devoted to encouraging responsibility and civic involvement of young women. She served Virginia Girls State as Special Counselor to the Governor for many years.

This is a one-year scholarship to be awarded to a delegate attending the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Virginia Girls State and planning to attend an accredited institution of higher education as a full-time student.
The recipient must have completed her junior year at an accredited high school in the state of Virginia.
The applicant must have completed a minimum of 30 hours of volunteer service within her community. A letter from the organization(s) verifying service must accompany the application.
The applicant must submit an original, typed essay consisting of no more than 500 words. The title reflects the Mission of Virginia Girls State: How I Envision Attending Virginia Girls State Will Influence My Future. Applicants must print and sign her name following the last paragraph of the essay.
The essay and all required statements must be stapled together and turned into the applicant’s counselor upon check-in at ALA Virginia Girls State.
The applicant’s involvement in meeting the responsibilities offered during her Virginia Girls State experience will be considered.
The recipient of the scholarship will be announced and presented a letter of confirmation at the closing ceremony of Virginia Girls State. A copy of the letter of confirmation will also be sent to the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Virginia secretary/treasurer.
The scholarship will be paid in a lump sum directly to the accredited institution of higher education upon written notification of the applicant’s final acceptance. The scholarship will be applied to the first year following graduation from high school. If the student does not complete the year, any refund of funds shall be returned to the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Virginia.
